The Best Summer Reads To Help Your L&D - Part 1

There’s nothing quite like sitting down in the sun with a good book. Whether you’re away on holiday, or just taking half an hour over lunch to sit out and read, why not make the most of your reading time to help enhance your learning and development, learn some new tricks to help run your business, or understand how to work with your team better?

We’ve pulled together a list of some of the best books to read over summer to kick back with, enjoy, and get your brain working - we've covered the first 4 in this part, so look out for part 2 next week.

Our Iceberg is Melting - Dr. John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber
Key theme - Change management

A regular when it comes to change management, Our Iceberg Is Melting tells the story of a group of penguins struggling to adapt to the changing environment. It’s a quick read that gives some vital lessons on how individuals react differently to change, and how to succeed under any conditions – all framed in a narrative that’s unfortunately all too real.

Leading - Alex Ferguson
Key theme - Leadership

Alex Ferguson’s managerial career is one to be envied. His 26 years at Manchester United demonstrate a vast range of leadership skills – and Sir Alex was kind enough to write a book detailing some of his most successful tools. Written in an anecdotal style, Leading has some great stories and practical lessons to learn off the back of them, that’ll help you manage more effectively in the workplace, but your personal life as well.

One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey - Ken Blanchard
Key theme – The art of delegation

Ken Blanchard is the go-to when it comes to leadership and management, and with over 60 books to his name, he’s somewhat prolific. With so many to choose from, it wasn’t easy whittling this down to just one, but we’ve gone with One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey.

It’s a great little book to help get a better grasp on ‘Monkey Management’ - those tasks and next steps that somehow leap from a team back onto their managers. The book gives plenty of practical advice on how delegate responsibility back to your subordinates, in order to not only give yourself more time to effectively manage, but to help your team grow and learn from their increased responsibility.

You can also take a look at a range of Blanchard’s training courses, such as Situational Leadership, Legendary Service, or First-Time Manager, if you’d like to dive a little deeper into some of his specific topics.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen Covey
Key theme - Being more effective

This book does what it says on the tin – gives you an in-depth look at 7 habits to adopt in order to become a more effective individual and achieve your goals.Without wanting to be too ‘spoiler-heavy’ here, the 7 habits are:
1. Be proactive
2. Begin with the end in mind
3. Put first things first
4. Think win-win
5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood
6. Synergize!
7. Sharpen the Saw; Growth

What each of those means in both theory and practice is explored in detail by Covey, as well as some more reflective elements about our own perceptions, and our definitions of success.
